Iowa State Capitol

Architectural Photography
Could there be a more prestigious building in Iowa? We can’t imagine one.
It was a great honor to be selected as the architectural photographer for our home state’s capitol by its non-partisan agency, Iowa Legislative Services Agency, who serves the General Assembly, including providing public tours. While the Iowa State Capitol is one of the most photographed buildings in the state, especially the Iowa State Law Library, it had been over 10 years since the capitol’s interior had been officially photographed. With a goal to capture the building’s largest rooms, we aimed to create timeless architectural photos that will serve as a time capsule for what the building looked like in our lifetime.
The gold leaf, carved stone, hand paintings, and astonishing architecture pull the eyes in all directions at the same time. There simply isn’t a wide enough lens to take it all in. And while there’s no replacement for seeing the Iowa Capitol in person, we brought our eye and specialty photo equipment to create extremely high detail images with virtually no distortion — the most honest and breathtaking vantage points a camera can capture.
